About Us
Accredited for Excellence
In 2008, CFECI earned accreditation from the Community Foundations National Standards, the nation’s leading philanthropic association. This accreditation seal represents a community foundation’s commitment to rigorous, sector-driven best practices that exceed federal and state law requirements and demonstrates accountability and excellence to communities, policymakers, and the public.
Our History
1972
Attorney John Franklin brought together a group of community-minded leaders with a shared belief: East Central Illinois deserved a permanent home for philanthropy. The Foundation launched with $1,300 in assets and a volunteer Board of Trustees committed to stewarding gifts large and small. What followed is a story of quiet, steady growth.
1979
Assets reached $141,000.
1988
Assets surpassed $1.5 million.
2004
The Foundation expanded its service area to become the Community Foundation of East Central Illinois serving nine counties across our region.
2020
Through a global pandemic, CFECI helped raise and distribute $1.2 million to organizations serving those most in need.
Today
That original $1,300 has grown to more than $42 million. We have distributed over $28.8 million in grants and scholarships to more than 700 nonprofits and causes across the region.
John Franklin’s vision endures — because this community keeps choosing to invest in its own future.
